Rise of bodybuilder influencers as gym goliaths flood social media

GONE are the days when a career in fitness meant earning a modest salary as a trainer at your local gym.

The onset of social media transformed the industry into one of the most lucrative available to driven and health-minded individuals.

Take Joe Wicks, aka The Body Coach, who boasts 4.6 million Instagram followers and, according to his bio, is “on a mission to make the world fitter, healthier, and happier”.

The 37-year-old is famous for his £89.99/year app which promises healthy recipes on a budget and exclusive HIIT workouts.

He came from humble beginnings, growing up on a council estate in Surrey with a dad who was a heroin addict and a mum who had mental health issues, before settling on a future as a personal trainer.
