Mum’s heartbreak as son found dead in prison after being given ‘combination’ of drugs’

Margaret Pomeroy spoke of her heartbreak as her son Michael McDonagh was found unresponsive at HMP Forest Bank, a Category B jail in Salford, Greater Manchester

A mum has shared her grief as her son was found dead inside his cell at a prison after being prescribed a “combination” of drugs.

When Michael McDonagh, 27, was found unresponsive and later declared dead, his mother Margaret Pomeroy was “entirely heartbroken”. His inquest this week was told Mr McDonagh, who had a “caring personality with a smile that could light up any room”, had been taking a number of medications to treat mental health problems including schizophrenia, anxiety, and depression, as well as substance abuse issues.

But days before his death in February 2019, dad-of-one Mr McDonagh had been prescribed methadone, in order to deal with withdrawal symptoms after admitting to taking the opioid, buprenorphine. He was then found unresponsive at HMP Forest Bank, a Category B jail in Salford, Greater Manchester.

Giving evidence at the inquest, pathologist Dr Naomi Carter said she was unable to answer whether Mr McDonagh would have died if he had not been prescribed methadone. She did, though, say the man died from bronchopneumonia after a “depressant” of his nervous system, which was likely caused by a “combination” of medications, Manchester Evening News reports.
