Lucy Letby hospital boss ‘was asked to take top NHS job after killer nurse’s arrest’

Lucy Letby was found guilty of seven counts of murder and six counts of attempted murder during her time as a neonatal nurse at the Countess of Chester Hospital between 2015 and 2016

Lucy Letby’s NHS trust boss was reportedly “persuaded” to take on another top job in the health service, following the killer’s arrest.

The 33-year-old nurse was recently found guilty of seven counts of murder and six counts of attempted murder, and sentenced to life behind bars with no chance of release. Letby worked at the Countess of Chester Hospital, in the neonatal unit, between 2015 and 2016.

Her top boss at the time was Tony Chambers, who was head of the Countess of Chester Trust. Mr Chambers resigned from the role in September 2018, just two months after Letby was arrested. Following this, he moved to a role in the Northern Care Alliance and in January 2020, as police investigated multiple murders in the Chester hospital he had once headed up, he was appointed interim CEO of Barking, Havering and Redbridge NHS Trust, in London.

The BBC reported that in a blog, published on the trust’s website shortly after his appointment, Mr Chambers allegedly said was asked to move to London by a senior NHS England (NHSE) official.
