Barbie smashes box office records beating Harry Potter, Full Monty and Grease

Barbie may have only just hit the big screen but it has already broken box office sale records as it has grossed more than iconic films such as Grease and Harry Potter

The blockbuster hit Barbie has left iconic films in its wake to become one of the highest box office selling films of all time.

The film, starring Hollywood stars such as Margot Robbie, 33, and Ryan Gosling, 42, tells the story of the blonde beauty heading off to the human world after being expelled from Barbieland. It has now been revealed that the film, which was only released in July, has already beaten big hitters such as Harry Potter, Grease and the Full Monty and has amassed a box office fortune of £89.1 million, according to recorded figures.

It is now just outside the top 20 highest earning films in the history of box office hits. Films including E.T., which was first released in 1982, earned £75.9 million, 2000’s Toy Story 2 earned £73.5 million and James Bond film, The Spy Who Loved Me, earned £67.3 million.

The figures were prepared by the British Film Institute (BFI) and are based on inflation-adjusted box office takings for all films released since data began in 1975. However, the film did take a slight dip by 28% between its fifth and sixth weekends on the back of its release.
