Premier League time-wasting crackdown a success – but Uefa doesn’t want it

English football’s crackdown on time-wasting has led to increases of up to seven minutes in average ball-in-play time – but Uefa will not use the same approach for the Champions League.

The ball was in play for an average of 59min 20sec in the Premier League during matches in August, nearly five minutes longer than last season’s 54:52. Even bigger increases have resulted from the new approach in the Championship (57:20, up from 52:13), League One (56:12, compared to 50:07) and League Two (55:17, up from 48:02). Sheffield Wednesday’s Championship match against Southampton on August 4 measured an astonishing 69 minutes of ball-in-play time.
