Air traffic control chaos LIVE: Hundreds of flights in and out of the UK hit by delays

National Air Traffic Services said it is experiencing a “technical issue” and has applied traffic flow restrictions to maintain safety, as thousands of passengers boarding flights back to the UK are affected

The UK’s leading provider of air traffic control systems has experienced a “major failure”, leading to hundreds of flights being delayed across the nation.

It is understood that passengers boarding flights back to the UK have been told of the fault. National Air Traffic Services (NATS) said it is experiencing a “technical issue” and has applied traffic flow restrictions to maintain safety.

The company said in a statement: “We are currently experiencing a technical issue and have applied traffic flow restrictions to maintain safety. Engineers are working to find and fix the fault. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.” According to Loganair, which first broke the news, there has been a “network-wide failure of UK air traffic control systems”.

Meanwhile, British Airways said it is “working closely with NATS to understand the impact of a technical issue that is affecting UK airspace”. At Stansted, Ryanair passengers said they had been told to wait at their gate until further notice.
