Prigozhin looks set to be denied state funeral

As recipient of Hero of Russia order, warlord should be given full honours but Kremlin says family to arrange funeral

Yevgeny Prigozhin looks set to be denied the state funeral he is entitled to after the Kremlin said it expected the mercenary boss’s family to make their own arrangements.

Mr Prigozhin who owes his meteoric rise to power to Vladimir Putin fell out of grace with the Kremlin after he mounted a failed mutiny in June.

Kremlin watchers say the funeral for the self-styled warlords will be a solid indication of what is going to happen to his legacy.

Months before he sent his troops to capture Moscow, Mr Prigozhin was awarded the Hero of Russia order, one of Russia’s most prestigious medals which entitles the recipient to a state funeral with an honorary guard and all the trappings of a burial of an important statesman.
