Like a Dragon Gaiden Gamescom Preview – The return of classic Yakuza still feels fresh

Gaiden follows Kiryu’s story between the events of Yakuza 6 and the upcoming Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth.

Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name is the latest entry in Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s premiere franchise, and brings back the series’ poster boy in style.

I was extremely hesitant when I first learned that Yakuza: Like a Dragon would be ditching the classic beat ‘em up style of the original entries to become a traditional turn-based RPG. But then it turned out to be my favourite game of the series, and I fell in love with the new protagonist Ichiban Kasuga.

In the latest instalment in the Like A Dragon (formerly Yakuza) series, Kiryu is back as the hero of this tale, and is bringing along the classic series combat with it. Following the events of Yakuza 6: The Song of Life, Kiryu has left his past life behind in order to protect the foster children in his care. In return, he has become a secret agent for the Daidoji faction and is plunged straight back into the criminal underworld he had worked so hard to escape from.

The Gamescom demo sees Kiryu – now known as Joryu – and informant Akane arriving at ‘the Castle’ which is a giant resort on the top of a boat. This area will be familiar to those who have played earlier entries as it’s basically Kamurocho’s Purgatory but on the back of a giant boat. Here you’ll find all manner of Like a Dragon staples like gambling minigames, karaoke, and cabaret clubs.
