Almost three quarters of a million middle-class households in Scotland face having hundreds of pounds added to their council tax bills, according to new analysis.
Proposals from the Scottish government and Cosla, the umbrella body for local authorities, would raise all bills in band E or higher. Annual payments will rise by between 7.5 per cent and 22.5 per cent, and the top end of the sliding scale will add £835 a year to household outgoings.
The SNP pledged to abolish the “unfair” council tax when it first came to power in 2007. The system is based on the market value of properties in 1991, and research published last week by Labour showed that thousands of low-income families would be hit by the plans to
