An ash cloud from Shishaldin Volcano has been reported by aircraft nearby reaching heights of 28,000 ft. It follows a several-hour increase in activity at the site. In response, the Aviation Colour Code for the volcano has been upgraded to red. The Aviation Color Code approach is similar to the Volcano Alert Level but is specifically for the aviation sector. It has been sent to red - which means eruption with significant ash emission is imminent, underway, or suspected - but is focused on whether there is a threat to aviation posed by volcanic ash. The Volcano Alert Level is now at a warning level, where it was previously reported at a watch level. This means: "Volcano is exhibiting heightened or escalating unrest with increased potential of eruption, timeframe uncertain, OR eruption is underway but poses limited hazards." It comes after the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) reported that the "level of unrest" had "increased" at Shishaldin Volcano. They said seismic tremor began to increase at around 3am local time (12pm BST) and was escalating. The AVO said: "Elevated surface temperatures consistent with lava erupting at the summit are evident in the latest satellite data", with "low-level" explosions thought to be taking place. Based on previous eruption cycles from the last month, the AVO is warning that "ash emissions are likely over the next few hours". There are also warnings that pyroclastic flows, which contain rock fragments, gas and ash travelling rapidly, and mudflows are also likely "on the immediate flanks of the volcano". Shishaldin began erupting on July 12 2023, and during this time the AVO reports there have been "seven significant explosive events" which have resulted in ash clouds reaching heights of 40,000 ft above sea level.
