Only two migrants deported to Europe under post-Brexit deal

Britain deported only two Channel migrants to Europe under its post-Brexit returns policy within the space of a year, Home Office figures have revealed.

Under rules introduced in January 2021, officials can deem asylum seekers “inadmissible” if they have travelled through a safe third country to reach Britain. But no migrants have been served with inadmissibility decisions in the last year for which figures are available, and just two were deported. Some 83 decisions have been served since the start of the scheme, with 23 deportations in total.

More than 93,000 migrants have arrived in Britain after crossing the Channel in small boats in that time. Earlier this month it was reported that the European Union was resisting a new migrant return deal to replace
