A taste for the good life on the Kyle of Tongue

When the 14th-century head of Clan Mackay flung up his castle on a steep hill high above the Kyle of Tongue, it’s my hunch he would have given the sword arm of one of his followers for a free-standing bath to lie in and survey his domain.

Seven centuries on, I’ve got one over on the grizzled chieftain. It may have been the notorious land-clearing Duke of Sutherland who five centuries later built a hunting lodge on the slopes opposite snaggle-toothed Castle Varrich – but it’s me who’s getting a soak with a view.

The bathtub is the new addition to my suite in what is now the Tongue Hotel and, unlike old Mackay, I don’t have to worry about my enemies sneaking up on
