Florida school district officials apologised Thursday after Bunnell Elementary school assembly singled out the students during a presentation on low test scores

A school principal and teacher have been placed on leave after Black students were singled out in assembly.

Florida school district officials apologised after Bunnell Elementary School assembly singled out the students in a presentation on low test scores. During the assembly, a 2023-2024 school year Goals and Objectives PowerPoint presentation was used that read in part “AA have underperform (sic) on standardized assessment for the last past 3 years”.

“AA is African American, and that is one subgroup the FDOE [Federal Department of Education] requires annual reporting on from all Florida schools. The power point, created by one of the presenters shows the data results,” Flagler County School Board chair Cheryl Massaro said

The presentation, led by two Black teachers, noted that Black students had underperformed on standardized tests for the past three years. They also discussed how students with higher grades had a better chance of going to college, while those with lower grades had a higher chance of going to jail, getting shot or getting killed, parents told The Daytona Beach News-Journal.
