Luis Rubiales suspended by FIFA after refusing to resign in World Cup scandal

Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales was criticised for kissing player Jenni Hermoso on the lips after his country defeated England in the Women’s World Cup final last Sunday

Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales has been provisionally suspended by FIFA for his actions at the Women’s World Cup final.

Rubiales caused controversy when he kissed Spain star Jenni Hermoso on the lips following the team’s 1-0 victory against England in Australia. Hermoso has insisted the kiss was not consensual, with fans and players calling for the disgraced president to resign.

Rubiales is refusing to step down from his position and the Spanish FA have tried to silence Hermoso by threatening legal action. FIFA were investigating the matter and have now taken action by suspending Rubiales from “all football-related activities”.

His ban will last for “an initial period of 90 days” while FIFA continue their investigation. It’s hard to see how Rubiales remains in his position, with several women’s and men’s players refusing to represent Spain with him in charge.
