A gardening expert has shared the simple task you can do in your garden this month to get it ready for the autumn months ahead – and it’ll help protect your flowers
If you have a garden space with flowers in it, you’ll know how important it is to make sure your plants are cared for year-round, with different seasons requiring different approaches to ensure your flowers stay healthy. And with the end of August rapidly approaching, you should be thinking about how to get your garden ready for the autumn months ahead.
Thankfully, preparing your garden for autumn isn’t all that difficult, and according to one gardening expert, there’s actually a very easy thing you can do right now that will help give your plants the best chance of surviving the cold weather that often comes with both autumn and winter.
Michael Griffiths shares gardening content on his TikTok account, @themediterraneangardener, and said that one of the easiest jobs you can do in your garden this month is pruning your flowers, which involves selectively removing parts of a plant to encourage growth. This should be done to certain flowers at specific times of the year in order to make sure they grow to their full potential.
This time of year is the best time to “prune lavender once their flowering is over”, according to Michael, as he explained that pruning your lavender now will prevent it from becoming leggy and twiggy. Lavender should be cut slightly above its side branches or leaf nodes so that there is still plenty of new growth underneath the plant.
