Spain’s acting PM Pedro Sanchez courts separatists with language concession

Pedro Sánchez, Spain’s acting prime minister, has courted the support of Basque and Catalan separatists by agreeing to enshrine the local languages of regions that want to break away from Madrid.

Among the concessions that Sánchez, who leads Spain’s Socialists, has made to secure the backing of the centre-right Catalan separatist party Together for Catalonia, known as Junts, is a guarantee that Madrid will further the cause of the languages spoken in Catalonia and the Basque country.

Spain has asked the EU to add the three languages to its list of 24 official languages within Europe as part of Sánchez’s efforts to secure a new term as prime minister.

However, the move would apply new pressures on Brussels if already stretched interpreters had to translate
