Hawaii wildfires: 850 people still missing after blaze ripped through Maui

Maui’s mayor said that the devastating wildfire caused unimaginable damage, with 850 people still missing, and 114 confirmed dead

In a statement today, Maui’s County Mayor has confirmed that 850 people are still missing after the devastating wildfires razed the historic town, and updated the death toll to 114.

Mayor Richard Bissen said he was ‘saddened’ by the numbers. With 114 officially dead, only 27 people have been identified, while hundreds remain missing as communication is still difficult around the island and the devastation has made it difficult to find family members.

Bissen told media that the FBI helped compile the missing person’s list by combining and refining various lists of unaccounted individuals from a number of different agencies, including the American Red Cross and the Emergency Management Agency.
