The comedian Mark Watson is enjoying his 23rd consecutive summer at the Edinburgh festival. For 21 of those, the 43-year-old Bristolian has been a star.
“I hesitate to call myself a ‘golden boy’ but that’s what it felt when I won an open-mike competition here in 2002,” he says. “All young comedians have aspirations and, for me, they came to fruition pretty quickly.”
Now performing a new show called Search as well as producing several other acts, it must all be very gratifying to be a noted festival veteran. “Twenty-three summers in the same city, I wonder whether I’ll be presented with a big silver key by the mayor or something,” Watson jokes.
