Former Lioness hails “under the radar” England hero and gives World Cup Final verdict

Former England goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain has backed England to beat Spain in the World Cup Final but thinks it could go all the way to penalties

Former England goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain has heaped praise on defender Alex Greenwood and believes the Lionesses have what it takes to triumph in the World Cup final.

Sarina Wiegman’s side defeated co-hosts Australia to book their place in the last two and will take on Spain at Stadium Australia on Sunday. England’s imperious defence has been fundamental to the Lionesses’ success at this summer’s tournament so far, with centre-back Greenwood winning plenty of her plaudits for her impressive displays at the back.

The Manchester City defender was drafted in to replace injured captain Leah Williamson, and Chamberlain believes her form has been central to England’s progression to the Final. “Alex Greenwood has been brilliant,” Chamberlain told Mirror Football, speaking at the Ladbrokes Women’s Football Festival. “She’s a player that quite often goes under the radar.

“Defenders tend to go unnoticed sometimes but she’s really stepped into this leadership role alongside Millie Bright. They have really led from the back. Greenwood’s distribution has been fantastic and all of her stats have been phenomenal.
