Cream teas are MPs’ favourite sweet treat as top Parliament confectionery list revealed

Despite Britain facing a worsening obesity epidemic, MPs and staff members tucked into more than 50 orders of scones and tea a day in 2021-22

Cream teas are MPs’ favourite sweet treat – and sold more than 18,300 in the Houses of Parliament last year, new figures reveal.

Despite Britain facing a worsening obesity epidemic, MPs and staff members tucked into more than 50 orders of scones and tea a day in 2021-22.

Parliament contains more than a dozen restaurants, cafes and kiosks selling food, drink and treats to the hundreds of people working on the estate. The traditional English tea-time snack topped the list of most popular confectionary, followed by carrot cake – which sold nearly 16,000, and cartons of Ribena, which sold 14,800. Some 11,123 croissants with butter and 10,122 slices of Victoria sponge were dished out over the same period.

“Cream teas are a proud British tradition and it is no surprise that they are so popular in Parliament – both are great sources of national debate,” said Plymouth Sutton and Devonport MP Luke Pollard. “Although as a Devon MP I am clear it should always be cream first.”
