Harry Kane’s move to Munich is not just to be envied for his £86 million transfer fee and rumoured salary of more than £20 million; this is also one of the most liveable cities in Europe, according to The Economist’s quality of life survey. It’s fair to say that the England captain has landed on his feet.
The Bavarian capital is premier league in many ways. Its location in the deep south of Germany means that it basks in more summer sun than any other city in the country. It also has easy access to the snow-topped Alps, which are visible from the city’s rooftops, frescoed across the horizon.
The city’s downtown area – with its traffic-free squares, pavement cafes and Italianate architecture – has more than a touch of la dolce vita. Kane will inevitably be drawn to its central park, the English Garden – although he may find the locals’ tackle-out tendencies while sunbathing here a touch offside. Kane, his wife and three children are apparently house-hunting in the city’s southern suburb of Grünwald, the local equivalent of Beverly Hills, where many of his fellow Bayern Munich players live. But he will have visitors, of course, and he will need to shepherd them towards the best accommodation.
