Lionel Messi responds to fears he could refuse to play some Inter Miami games

Concerns were raised over Lionel Messi’s stance on playing on artificial pitches in MLS following his move to Inter Miami and he has now broken his silence on the speculation

Lionel Messi has made it clear that he has no problem with playing on artificial grass, putting to rest the rumours he wanted to avoid pitches that aren’t natural turf in MLS.

From his time playing in Europe, for Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, as well as on the global stage with Argentina, the 36-year-old has been accustom to some of the finest grass pitches in the world. In MLS, however, six teams still play on fake grass – Seattle Sounders, Portland Timbers, Atlanta United, New England Revolution, Charlotte FC and Vancouver Whitecaps. A further four clubs utilise a hybrid grass variant, blending roots with synthetic fibres.

Playing on synthetic grass can increase risk of injury and it has been rumoured Messi may refuse to play on any such surface. He has debunked these theories, however, while also discussing the hot weather in Florida.

“I came from a month of vacation, more or less, and at first, it was difficult for me day to day,” said Messi during a press conference on Thursday. “It is very hot at this time, and there is a lot of humidity, and sometimes it shows, but the truth is that I adapted and I feel very comfortable.
