Residents are spending more than 10 per cent of average pay on council tax in some parts of the country, according to analysis that finds those in the north and west of England are hit hardest by the system.
London and the south east get off most lightly from council tax, with the lowest burden relative to both local wages and house prices.
People in areas such as Devon and Nottingham are paying five times as much relative to local salaries as residents in some London boroughs, according to figures, leading to accusations that struggling families are bearing the brunt of rising council tax.
