Survivors of Hawaii wildfires urged not to drink tap water in chemical threat

An estimated 2,700 buildings around Lahaina on the island of Maui contain hazardous household wastes and toxic materials from burned homes and businesses, according to the Hawaiian Department of Health

Survivors of the Hawaii wildfires have been warned to expect months of chemical contamination – with residents being urged to avoid tap water and limit showers.

An estimated 2,700 buildings around Lahaina contain hazardous household wastes and toxic materials from burned homes and businesses, according to the Hawaiian Department of Health. They also warned that ash and dust could contain deadly toxic chemicals such as arsenic, lead and, asbestos.

Officials have advised residents to wear surgical masks, goggles, gloves, and closed-toed shoes to avoid skin contact with ash. They have warned people to avoid washing ash into drains or using vacuums that will stir up carcinogenic particles in the air.

Maui County officials asked residents of Lahaina and Upper Kula on Friday to avoid tap water for cooking and drinking and limit shower and bathing time. This is due to contaminants and volatile organic chemicals potentially entering the water supply when buildings were destroyed.
