Laura Muir ends summer of discontent with GB captaincy for World Championships

British star lifts lid on one of the most challenging periods in her career as she prepares to challenge for 1500m podium in Budapest

Laura Muir has ended a summer of discontent by finding a new coach and being named GB team captain for the World Championships.

The Scottish 1500m star last night opened up on perhaps the most challenging period of her glittering career, having split with long-time coach Andy Young in March, been beaten in two races by British rivals and left visibly upset after losing her national title.

Six weeks on she has the spring back in her step after linking up with new coach Steve Vernon and smashing Zola Budd’s 1985 British mile record.

“The last six months, I’ve learnt the most about myself that I have in my entire life,” she said. “It’s been a roller coaster. But we’re at a high point now. I’m very happy.”
