AUSTRALIA 1-3 ENGLAND: The Lionesses became the first senior England team – men’s or women’s – to reach a World Cup final on foreign soil and will face Spain on Sunday after a superb display
England are through to a first ever Women’s World Cup final.
The Lionesses stormed past co-hosts Australia with goals from Ella Toone, Lauren Hemp and Alessia Russo securing a 3-1 win and a final date with Spain on Sunday. The European Champions below the Matildas away with their best performance of the tournament to date.
Toone fired England in front with a superb strike in 36th minute, with the European Champions dominant throughout the first half. But Australia hit back thanks to a wonder strike from Sam Kerr not long after the hour mark as Stadium Australia’s sell-out crowd erupted.
Bright was at fault for the Kerr goal, failing to close down her space at the right time, but immediately made amends. The skipper picked out Hemp’s run with a superb long pass and, helped by some poor defending, the England forward slotted the ball home.
