England’s goalkeeper Mary Earps has worked hard to build a name for herself and live a luxury life off the pitch thanks to her family’s support following heartbreaking setbacks
England’s goalkeeper Mary Earps has built up a name for herself on the pitch with her impressive talent, which landed her being crowned the Best FIFA Women’s Goalkeeper in the World.
However, things haven’t been easy for the first-class player as Mary thought her dream career was over just three years ago. The Nottingham-born ace was hoping her efforts for Manchester United would earn her a recall to the England team in September 2020. But, she didn’t make it. Goalkeepers Carly Telford, Ellie Roebuck, Hannah Hampton and Sandy MacIver were all picked ahead of her.
Upon hearing the news, Mary sank to her kitchen floor and cried. She recalled: “I got to a point where I felt I had sort of reached my limits. I had given football a good go, but wasn’t quite good enough. I had responsibilities, I had a mortgage and it wasn’t adding up.” Mary decided to give football a go for another two years and with the help of England’s new football manager, Sarina Wiegman, she got back on the pitch for her country.
Mary has proven she has a rightful place back in the squad, competing in the 2023 Women’s World Cup. Away from the pitch the pro player lives her best life travelling the world and spending time with her loved ones at home. The 30-year-old is close with her family and has said they all keep her grounded with her new-found success. Speaking to GQ Magazine, she revealed that it was during a kickabout in the garden with her dad and brother that she decided she wanted to be a professional footballer.
