Jofra Archer and Harry Brook out of Cricket World Cup after Ben Stokes U-turn confirmed

England favourites Ben Stokes and Joe Root are included in Jos Buttler’s World Cup squad – but there’s no room for Ashes star Harry Brook or 2019 hero Jofra Archer

Jofra Archer will miss this year’s Cricket World Cup in India – unless “something miraculous” happens in his recovery from injury.

England selector Luke Wright has confirmed the 15-man squad for next month’s one-day international (ODI) series against New Zealand will also travel to India for the 50-over tournament. Ben Stokes is part of that squad after reversing his ODI retirement.

Although Stokes is included, there is no place for Harry Brook. The big-hitting Yorkshireman, who has made a blistering start to his Test career, has been snubbed to make way for Stokes, with Joe Root also returning to the white-ball fold after a year’s absence.

England have until September 28 to confirm their squad for the World Cup, which starts in October. They will play four ODIs and four T20Is against New Zealand before travelling to India to defend their title, which was won on home soil four years ago.
