Trump’s Georgia ‘mobster’ indictment is ‘serious trouble’ as he faces 20 years in jail

Former president Donald Trump and 18 others have been indicted with racketeering under Georgia’s RICO law for their alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election

Donald Trump’s indictment under a law previously used to take down Mafia bosses has shown he’s in “serious trouble” – with the former president facing up to 20 years in jail if found guilty, according to an expert.

The Fulton County district attorney’s office unveiled a lengthy set of charges against the 77-year-old, along with some of his compatriots, for conspiring to overturn his defeat in the 2020 presidential election in Georgia.

Using Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organisations, or RICO, the law was used to charge Mr Trump and his associates. The law originated in 1970 and was used to target people in positions of authority and criminal gangs, who commit separate crimes and are working towards a common goal.

It helped bring down lots of high-profile public corruption cases in the late 1980s and early 1990s and even helped convict American gangsters and mafia bosses John Gotti and Carmine Persico.
