As the murder trial entered its sixth week, the public gallery at Minshull Street Crown Court had to be cleared by the judge while Hillier was questioned about the killing on Monday. Remarks were shouted from the gallery including 'he's not a rapist', 'you piece of s***' and 'rot in hell, both of you'. Giving evidence for the first time, Hillier claimed that the couple formed a plan to attack dad-of-two Mr Smith after she told him she'd been 'graphically raped' in 2019. Hillier said: 'The plan was immediate, it was decided straight away that something was going to happen to Liam Smith.' He said that his girlfriend Fulstow was "well on board" and "wanted to make sure that he was held accountable for his actions, and that he suffered.' Hillier claimed that Ms Fulstow viewed him as her 'knight in shining armour'. Hillier said: 'She couldn't believe someone could go so above and beyond the call of duty.' He told jurors that other plans had also been considered including having his 'penis severed', but that he 'couldn't go through with it'. He told the court that he bought a blank firing gun and converted it after carrying out 'experiments - adding that it "wasn't intended to cause grievous bodily harm or kill" but was "intended just to stun him".
