Patients with symptoms of cancer could skip seeing a GP and go straight for a scan under plans being considered by the Health Secretary.
In an interview with The Telegraph, Steve Barclay said health officials are examining radical ways to “design out bottlenecks” in the system, so those with symptoms can get scans and specialist help more quickly.
Currently, patients experiencing cancer symptoms typically visit their GP who refers them to a specialist or for a scan.
Mr Barclay’s officials are working on proposals which would mean some patients can skip this first stage and go straight to an NHS diagnostic centre – or “one stop shop” – without a GP referral.
