One Brit lost 20 stone after struggling his entire adult life being overweight, but has been left just as miserable as before.
After decades of struggling with his weight, and living a “yo-yo” life, Wayne Shepherd underwent a gastric sleeve in June last year. He walked into the surgery weighing over 35st and left weighing 14st 8lb.
The 40-year-old from Soham, Cambridgeshire, had spent his life struggling to control his weight. As a child he had been viciously bullied at school, causing him to self-harm and have a breakdown. Later in life he felt ostracised and isolated due to his weight, and without proper help, often returned to what he knew – eating food.
Speaking to The Mirror, Wayne explained how complex the factors led to him weighing so much as he pushed back at some simplistic criticisms saying he inflicted it upon himself. He described how if his childhood had been free of the horrific bullying that marked it, and he had had better access to healthy foods, and support for his mental health, then things might’ve been completely different.
