Number of nurses who plan to work abroad doubles in four years

The number of Scottish nurses who hope to move abroad for work has soared, with America, Australia and New Zealand the main destinations.

Last year 583 nurses and midwives who planned to go overseas asked the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) for a certificate of professional status. That figure was up by 62 per cent on 2020-21 and double the total for 2018-19.

Most of those leaving intended to go to Australia with 359 submissions last year, followed by New Zealand and the US.

“The significant increase in the numbers requesting certificates is worrying. Scotland doesn’t have the nursing staff it needs, with stubbornly high vacancy rates across NHS and social care,” said Colin Poolman, director of the Royal College of Nursing Scotland.
