Hawaii wildfires: Horrifying footage shows Maui residents fleeing into stormy ocean

Grim footage from Maui, Hawaii, shows people being thrown around and clinging to the sea wall in choppy water to escape the flames of the deadliest wildfire in US history

Horrifying footage shows the moment Maui residents were forced to dive into the Pacific Ocean to avoid deadly wildfire flames.

Flames lapped close to the share as a number of catastrophic wildfires spread through the Hawaiian island, leading to the deaths of at least 93 people, with many more believed to have perished. The tragic blazes are already the deadliest wildfires in US history.

In the footage, people from the devastated town of Lahaina can be seen in the choppy water as thick smoke from the fires surrounds them.

Hot ash glowing orange is visibly floating down to the sea in the footage as desperate residents are thrown forward towards the rocks on the sea wall. There have been numerous reports from Maui that say survivors escaped the flames by going to the ocean, but some bodies were pulled from the water.
