Floundering Rishi Sunak may have enjoyed a sun-filled break at his California hideaway, but he’ll arrive back to a full inbox and plenty of fires to put out.
While he was away the Tories have been doing what they do best – squabbling among themselves. And as he settles back into No10, Mr Sunak will have to deal with the fallout from the catastrophic “Stop The Small Boats” week – which gave ministers a chance to show staggering levels of incompetence.
With a difficult Conservative Party Conference on the horizon, he’ll also need to decide whether to ditch failing ministers now, even if it risks another Tory civil war. Meanwhile growing NHS waiting lists, mortgage misery and the Bibby Stockholm farce – more of that below – will leave voters wondering if he can deliver on anything he promised.
