Customers ‘enraged’ by ‘tricky’ new addition to Walmart’s self checkout counter

Walmart’s found a new way to make money off customers, and this addition to the self-checkout counter is very noticeable

Walmart shoppers have a new feature to look forward to as they stroll through the aisles and try to check out – third-party ads and commercials.

The world’s biggest retailer plans on adding ads to the screens they already have throughout the store, so expect to see them in the TV section and on self-checkout screens. The store’s radio will also likely begin playing commercials and shoppers may see some demo stations where they can get samples on occasion.

“When you think about our store, our store footprint, and the percentage of Americans that we reach through our stores, we can deliver Super Bowl-sized audiences every week,” said Ryan Mayward, the senior vice president of retail media sales for Walmart Connect.

Kroger and Target have made similar moves, but none of them have Walmart’s reach. With over 4,000 stores throughout the US, 90 per cent of Walmart shoppers lives within 10 miles of a store. That opens the brand up for local and national companies to advertise at their locations.
