It’s a construction company with a government over a barrel, its upper hand effectively gripping on to the scruff of the national coffers. Extraordinary, really, to think there is virtual open warfare between the state and the company building our new national children’s hospital and it just seems to be an accepted fact.
Sure we’ll eventually end up with a medical Taj Mahal. In time – no one knows how long – this building will do exceptionally important work in treating sick children. But let its elaborate façade serve as a reminder to us that a fur coat approach, that doesn’t pay anywhere near enough attention to the inside seams, can be financially ruinous.
