‘We live underneath Spaghetti Junction

Gravelly Hill Interchange in Birmingham is one of the country’s most iconic concrete structures. Some people live underneath it love it, but others don’t like how noisy it is

Residents living underneath an infamous road known as Spaghetti Junction have said their homes constantly get covered in dirt and their area is really noisy – but they still love it.

Gravelly Hill Interchange is the UK’s busiest motorway junction and is one of the country’s most iconic concrete structures which turned 50 last year. It is also one of the biggest motorway interchanges in Europe, with more than 200,000 vehicles travelling on it daily.

Spaghetti Junction even appears in the Guinness Book of World Records where it is described as “the most complex interchange on the British road system” – just underneath it, there is a community of people who go about their lives normally while thousands of cars pass above.

Locals admit they can be woken up early by beeping horns and boy racers using the roads as a race track. Others say sirens can be heard at all hours and traffic causes dust and dirt to settle in their homes, gardens and on cars.
