Cristian Romero scores and then subbed off seconds later in Tottenham injury scare

Cristian Romero endured a mixed afternoon as Tottenham took on Brentford in West London as he was forced to come off the pitch by new boss Ange Postecoglou despite scoring the opening goal

Ange Postecoglou laid down the law to Cristian Romero as he went against the Tottenham star’s wishes to substitute him just seconds after scoring.

The Argentine was named in Spurs’ starting XI at the Gtech Community Stadium on Sunday as the ex-Celtic boss looked to get his Premier League stint off to a flier. Postecoglou got the quick start that he had desired as Romero opened the scoring with a thunderous header from James Maddison’s free-kick.

A VAR check for a potential offside did curtail his celebrations slightly but the goal was eventually awarded. Whilst he was then allowed to toast just his second goal for the club, Romero’s delight then turned into frustration.

Shortly before his goal he appeared to receive a bang to the head in a tussle with Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo and received subsequent treatment. As he walked back to the restart, he was surrounded by team-mates but expressed his wish to continue.
