Lionel Messi becomes Leagues Cup record goalscorer already after latest Inter Miami victory

Lionel Messi scored during Inter Miami’s 4-0 win over Charlotte FC in the quarter-final of the Leagues Cup and in the process has broke a record in the competition

Lionel Messi is already a record holder at Inter Miami despite only playing a handful of games for the club.

Miami were in Leagues Cup action against Charlotte FC on Friday night in the quarter-final. Gerardo Martino’s team recorded a 4-0 win to book their place in the semi-final of the competition.

Messi scored Miami’s final goal of the game in the 86th minute to wrap up the victory. Josef Martinez opened the scoring from the penalty spot, with Robert Taylor doubling the lead before an Adilson Malanda own goal almost sealed the win.

As a result, Miami will now play Major League Soccer rivals Philadelphia Union in the semi-final of the competition. The game will take place on Tuesday, August 15 and the winner will play either Monterrey or Nashville SC in the final.
