Manchester United have spent big this summer to enhance Erik ten Hag’s squad and after the Dutchman led the side to two domestic cup finals last term, Dimitar Berbatov believes now is the time to challenge for the Premier League title again
Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has told Erik ten Hag that he must now mount a serious challenge for the Premier League.
Berbatov, a two-time title winner during a four-year spell working under Sir Alex Ferguson, feels United’s Dutch manager has to justify his £375million-plus outlay in the transfer market over the past 12 months by bringing some heat on Pep Guardiola’s dominant Manchester City.
United have spent a bank-busting £165million this summer on landing Rasmus Hojlund, Mason Mount and Andre Onana after handing Ten Hag a £210million kitty on his arrival at Old Trafford last year. Berbatov reckons Ten Hag enhanced his glowing reputation by guiding the Reds to the Carabao Cup and a top-four finish in his first season at the helm.
But after watching Guardiola emulate Ferguson’s Treble, the Bulgarian feels the United boss must deliver even more this time.
