Girl, 8, dies in parents arms after numb arm turned out to be sign of silent killer

The family of Emily Smith, 8, who sadly died from a brain tumour has vowed to walk 192 miles in the coast-to-coast challenge whilst they recover from a car accident

A young girl who was known as the “sunshine” of her family tragically died in their arms after she was diagnosed with a silent brain tumour.

Emily Smith, from St Albans, Hertfordshire, received the devastating diagnosis after she noticed an “unusual” feeling in her left arm and her right leg. The eight-year-old “left school for the summer with nothing wrong” in July last year, but was soon unable to use her arm normally.

Her parents Sarah and Andy Smith alerted the emergency services after the feeling started to spread. She was rushed to hospital and undertook an MRI the same evening. Emily’s family were left shocked after doctors identified a brain tumour. They said Emily hadn’t experienced the regular symptoms that are linked to the condition such as sickness and headaches because the tumour was found deep in her brain.

Once home and under the care of Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridgeshire, Emily’s condition rapidly deteriorated, reports Hertfordshire Live. Surgery was planned in an attempt to remove as much of the tumour as possible followed by post-op radiotherapy to slow the growth.
