World oil demand hits record high, says International Energy Agency

Oil demand hit an all-time high in June as holidaymakers took to the skies and China used more than expected.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) said that demand reached 103 million barrels per day in June, exceeding the previous record of 102.4 million barrels per day set before the pandemic, in August 2019. It predicted that demand could increase further to set a new record of as much as 103.6 million barrels per day this month.

“World oil demand is scaling record highs, boosted by strong summer air travel, increased oil use in power generation and surging Chinese petrochemical activity,” the agency said in its monthly oil market report.
