GP’s warning about ‘silent killer’ that affects 1 in 4 people and how to prevent it

Dr Raj Bethapudi has spoken about the dangers of high blood pressure and says many of those suffering from the “silent killer” are at risk of a stroke or a heart attack

A worried GP has issued an urgent warning about “silent killer” high blood pressure putting patients at risk of a stroke.

The NHS says if it is too high, it puts extra strain on your blood vessels, heart and other organs, such as the brain, kidneys and eyes. Some twelve million people have hypertension in the UK, but the good news is it can be treated with lifestyle tweaks and medication.

One in four adults worldwide suffer and Dr Raj Bethapudi, a doctor in Sunderland, is leading on prevention of cardiovascular disease, which can manifest in a stroke. Dr Bethapudi has shared his advice for reducing the risk of high blood pressure. One thing that may help this could be through taking statins, he says.

One of his patients has spoken of how they’ve been working to reduce his blood pressure ahead of a routine surgery. The GP – who works at the Galleries Medical Practice in Washington – told ChronicleLive: “Prevention doesn’t often grab the headlines, but this is worth shouting about. Our practices are leading the way and saving lives – and we want to save more.
