Lewis Hamilton worry as Mercedes baffled by “annoyingly dead” aspect of their F1 car

Mercedes have made progress this season and Lewis Hamilton has been thrilled with the effort put in by the team’s staff, but they remain some way off where they want to be

Mercedes remain flummoxed by a problem affecting the stability of their Formula 1 cars this season, technical director James Allison has admitted.

After beginning the season in glum fashion, Mercedes have made notable progress in the development of their W14. The Silver Arrows remain some way off runaway leaders Red Bull in terms of competitiveness, but can claim to now have the second quickest car right now having out-developed their Ferrari and Aston Martin rivals.

There remains, however, some way to go. Catching Red Bull is the ultimate aim, but competing with those imperious RB19s in race conditions on a regular basis will be a pipe dream until Mercedes can get on top of the stability issues which continue to plague their own machines.

It’s a problem Lewis Hamilton has complained about. Early in the season, he said: “We’re a long way down on downforce. So we’ve got to pick up the rear end downforce particularly. The more rear we gain, the more stable the rear becomes, and the more confident I’ll be able to attack.”
