Metro 2033 creator faces eight years in jail if he returns to Russia

The writer of the Metro novels and video games has been handed an eight-year prison sentence, for his opposition to the Ukraine war.

He was already on a Russian wanted list but now writer Dmitry Glukhovsky has been sentenced to eight years in jail, even though he left Russia some time ago.

A Moscow court tried him anyway and found him guilty of spreading false information about Russian’s armed forces. Specifically, he’s accused of posting texts and videos on social media showing war crimes committed by Russian soldiers – crimes which Russia insists didn’t happen.

Glukhovsky was a journalist before he became a novelist, and from there became involved in the video games industry. We were very impressed by his comments on growing up in Russia, when we interviewed him for Metro Exodus in 2019, and he talked about how he ‘lived in a post-apocalyptic state.’

More recently he stated that, ‘Putin is becoming more terrible and inhuman every day, and the pretexts under which it [the invasion of Ukraine] was started look more and more insignificant and false.’
