Cases of fast-spreading new Covid ‘variant of interest’ Eris are on the rise

A NEW Covid strain has been labelled a “variant of interest” after it caused a swell in cases.

The EG.5 “Eris” strain is currently circulating in the UK, the US, Europe, East Asia and elsewhere, the World Health Organization said.

The fast-spreading variant is now the most prevalent in the US, making up 17 per cent of cases.

Latest data shows it is the second most prevalent strain in the UK, accounting for 14.6 per cent of cases, according to the UKHSA.

Overall Covid infections are thought to have jumped from 606,656 on July 4 to 785,980 on July 27, according to the Zoe Health Study.
