Rangers need time to gel but the clock is ticking for Michael Beale

Of the players Rangers used to overcome Servette and give themselves the narrowest of advantages ahead of Tuesday’s second leg in Geneva, nine of them were not at the club last Christmas. Four of the starters joined this summer and so did three of the substitutes Michael Beale used off the bench. Danilo had trained only four times with his new team-mates, said Beale. Jose Cifuentes, who came on for his debut, had done so only twice.

They will barely know everybody’s names, some of these new players so recently thrown together, but being an embryonic side will not spare them a firestorm of criticism if a resilient but average Servette come from behind to knock them out of the Champions League. It was telling
