Weighed in: new group will tell heavy riders to get off their horses

Weigh-ins are not typically a fixture of equestrian shows but scales are to be brought into some major events next year in response to concerns that some riders are too heavy for their horses.

Twelve riders were asked to dismount at the Royal Three Counties show in Malvern, Worcestershire – one of the most prestigious events on the equestrian calendar – in June because of their weight.

For the first time, the show applied a rule stating that any riders on the showground must be “suitably mounted”. There are plans to go further next year and bring in a weight limit for anyone hoping to ride at the event.
