Around 50,000 fans are expected at this week’s AIG Women’s Open at Walton Heath, but R&A chief executive Martin Slumbers wants more. “We need to have bigger crowds,” he said, pointing out the men’s version attracted 265,000 people last month. “I would love this event to have a quarter of a million.”
That may feel like years away, but a record $9 million (£7.1 million) prize fund shows how far the women’s game has come. New sensation Rose Zhang has raised interest and a smattering of home hopefuls, including Charley Hull and 2018 champion Georgia Hall, will attract partisan support.
